رفته‌ام / نرفته‌ام

The Present Perfect

Level 3

نوشته + ـام → نوشته‌ام. Compare نوشتم, a simple completed past event.

How It Works

Person forms. With رفتن, use رفته‌ام، رفته‌ای، رفته است، رفته‌ایم، رفته‌اید، رفته‌اند. The participle stays رفته; the attached ending or است identifies the person.

Negation. Put نـ on the lexical participle: نرفته‌ام, نخوانده‌ای. With a compound, negate its verbal component: کار نکرده‌ام.

Experience and a current result. تا حالا این فیلم را ندیده‌ام concerns experience up to now. دستم را شسته‌ام can make the washing relevant to what happens next.

Past reports. Perfect forms also occur in accounts of earlier events. They do not invariably prove that the speaker only heard the information or never witnessed it. Such readings depend on the discourse.

Writing and speech. Preserve the standard written endings here. Ordinary Iranian speech often reduces them, and some spoken perfect forms can sound like simple past forms; context then matters. Do not force a written distinction onto every audio form.
