کتابی که آن را خواندم
Objects Inside Relative Clauses
کتابی که [آن را] خواندم. The object inside the clause refers back to کتابی.
How It Works
Read an understood object. کتابی که خواندم کوتاه بود has no written object after که. The head noun کتابی supplies what was read. خواندم still refers to the speaker who did the reading.
Read the explicit object. کتابی که آن را خواندم کوتاه بود points back to the book with آن را. را accompanies that object; it is not a suffix on که. Both versions identify the book in this restrictive construction.
Track different roles. خانهای که در آن زندگی میکنم needs a place expression inside the clause: در آن. Do not erase the preposition and pronoun just because a direct object can be understood. A subject relative also has its own rules and does not automatically add او.
Keep additional-information clauses separate. A clause adding information about a named person is not the same identifying construction. سارا، که دیروز او را دیدم، اینجاست explicitly keeps the referring object. Learn the two clause types before treating every gap and pronoun as interchangeable.
