Ezafe After a Vowel
پایِ من and مویِ من use a linking ye after a vowel. خانهٔ من also has the spoken connector ye.
How It Works
| Base | Linked phrase | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| پا | پایِ من | pā-ye man |
| مو | مویِ من | mu-ye man |
| خانه | خانهٔ من | xāne-ye man |
After پا or مو, write the linking ی before the next word. A teaching kasra may clarify the following e but ordinary text often leaves it out.
After final ه that writes /e/, you will meet خانهٔ من, خانۀ من and خانهی من. They represent the same linker in this phrase, although publications follow their own spelling conventions. Keep one chosen convention consistent rather than marking the other familiar notation as a grammar error.
A word ending in pronounced /h/, such as ماه, is consonant-final: ماهِ بعد uses the ordinary -e connector. Do not decide from the letter ه alone.
After final ی representing /i/, ordinary spelling often leaves the linking pronunciation unwritten, as in صندلیِ من. Learn the actual word and phrase.
Examples (5)
- پایِ من
my foot; my leg
پا + linking ی gives pā-ye man.
- مویِ سارا
Sara’s hair
مو takes the linking y before e.
- خانهٔ ما
our home
Final ه writes /e/; the marked ezafe is pronounced ye.
- ماهِ بعد
next month
The final ه is the consonant h, so the connector is ordinary -e.
- صندلیِ من
my chair
The noun’s final ی represents /i/; the connector follows in pronunciation.
