Impersonal Possibility

Level 4

می‌شود اینجا نشست؟ → is sitting here possible or allowed?

How It Works

Read the impersonal action. می‌شود اینجا نشست؟ presents sitting without a person ending on نشست. This is the short nonfinite action form in this construction, not a report that someone sat yesterday.

Name the actor. می‌شود من هم بیایم؟ uses first-singular بیایم to ask about the speaker coming too. The actor is on the dependent verb; می‌شود itself is not changed to می‌شوم.

Negate possibility. نمی‌شود از این در وارد شد can mean entry is impossible or not permitted, depending on the setting. The grammar alone does not identify whether a locked door or a rule prevents it.

Compare becoming. هوا سرد می‌شود says the weather becomes cold. سرد describes the changing state, rather than an action whose possibility is being evaluated. Read the whole complement before deciding what شدن contributes.

Examples (4)

  1. می‌شود اینجا نشست؟

    Can one sit here?

  2. می‌شود من هم بیایم؟

    Can I come too?

  3. نمی‌شود از این در وارد شد.

One cannot enter through this door.

The setting decides physical possibility versus permission.

  4. می‌شود این سؤال را دوباره بپرسم؟

May I ask this question again?
