Contrast and Participant Roles in Word Order
این کتاب را = object. سارا = reader. خواند = event.
How It Works
Keep the marked object. این کتاب را سارا خواند begins with the book, but را still marks it as the direct object. Sara remains the reader. An English first-noun-is-subject shortcut would reverse the participants.
Use the preceding question. After این کتاب را چه کسی خواند؟, the answer can emphasize Sara as the reader. After a question about what Sara read, the same participants can support a book contrast. The visible order does not encode one exclusive focus interpretation.
Read paired contrasts. این کتاب را سارا خواند و آن کتاب را رضا خواند contrasts both objects and readers. Parallel markers help the reader align each book with its own participant.
Retain the phrase boundary. In کتابی را که خریده بودم سارا خواند, the relative clause describes the object book. The later Sara is the main reader; the first-singular ending inside خریده بودم identifies a different participant in the buying event.
Examples (4)
- این کتاب را سارا خواند.

- این کتاب را چه کسی خواند؟
Who read this book?
- این کتاب را سارا خواند و آن کتاب را رضا خواند.
Sara read this book, and Reza read that book.
- کتابی را که خریده بودم سارا خواند.
Sara read the book I had bought.
The relative-clause buyer and main-clause reader are different people.
How It Connects
