sus

The Preposition Sus

Level 1

Sus means on, and it puts something on top of a surface.

How It Works

Sus means on or on top of. It joins lo and los the way a, de and per do: sus + lo = sul, and sus + los = suls. Before la, las and a vowel it stays apart.

WordsWrittenExample
sus + losulsul lièch (on the bed)
sus + lossulssuls lièchs (on the beds)
sus + lasus lasus la taula (on the table)
sus + lassus lassus las cadièras (on the chairs)
sus + l'sus l'sus l'èrba (on the grass)

Some writers keep the words apart, as in sus lo lièch, but sul and suls are far more common in print, so this course writes them.

Sus is the opposite of sota (under). A longer word, dessús, means above or on top, and you meet it at a later level.
