Jobs Without an Article

Level 1

After èsser, a job is used like an adjective, without un or una.

How It Works

After èsser, a job comes without an article, the way a nationality does.

MasculineFeminine
professorprofessora
estudiantestudianta
cosinièrcosinièra

Most jobs add -a for a woman, as in professora, and those in -ièr change to -ièra, as in cosinièra. Some jobs have one form for a man and a woman, such as mètge (doctor), and with no article nothing else shows the gender.

When you add a word that describes the person, the article comes back: Es un mètge famós (He is a famous doctor).

The plural adds -s: Son estudiants (They are students).

Examples (5)

  1. Soi professora.

    I am a teacher.

    No una before professora.

  2. Joan es mètge.

    Joan is a doctor.

    No un before mètge.

  3. Marta es estudianta.

    Marta is a student.

    Estudianta: the feminine form.

  4. Pèire e Joan son cosinièrs.

    Pèire and Joan are cooks.

    The plural adds -s.

  5. Es un mètge famós.

    He is a famous doctor.

With an adjective, un comes back.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine form for a woman

    Marta es estudiant.
    Marta es estudianta.

The job agrees with the person, so a woman takes estudianta.
