contra, segon, malgrat
Against, According to, Despite
Contra, segon and malgrat are prepositions, so a noun follows each of them.
How It Works
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| contra | against | Joan es contra aquela idèa. |
| contra | against (touching) | Metèt la cadièra contra la paret. |
| segon | according to | Segon Maria, fa fred. |
| malgrat | despite | Malgrat lo fred, sortiguèt. |
Contra has two uses: against an idea or a person, and against a thing you touch, such as a wall. Do not confuse segon (according to) with segond (second).
A phrase with segon or malgrat often opens the sentence and is followed by a comma, as in Segon lo jornal, plourà deman.
To say despite with a whole clause, as in despite the fact that it was cold, Occitan uses a conjunction such as encara que. That comes at Level 5.
