वर्षको

Saying Your Age

Level 1Sounds Like varṣakō

Put वर्षको after a number and add छु to give your age.

How It Works

Nepali does not say I have ten years or I am ten alone. It says I am of ten years: म दस वर्षको छु.

WhoPatternExample
a man or a boyवर्षको छमेरो भाइ सात वर्षको छ
a woman or a girlवर्षकी छेमेरी बहिनी आठ वर्षकी छे
several peopleवर्षका छन्उनीहरू दस वर्षका छन्

To ask someone's age politely, say तपाईंको उमेर कति हो? (your age, how much is it?). With a friend, say तिमी कति वर्षको छौ? To a girl, say तिमी कति वर्षकी छौ?

The verb is छ and not हो, because the age is a state. The age number comes right before वर्षको and is written as a word in the early lessons.

Examples (5)

  1. म दस वर्षको छु।

    I am ten years old.

वर्षको follows the number, and छु agrees with म.

  2. मेरी बहिनी आठ वर्षकी छे।

My younger sister is eight years old.

The feminine ending -की fits a girl.

  3. मेरो भाइ सात वर्षको छ।

My younger brother is seven years old.

    वर्षको fits a boy.

  4. तपाईंको उमेर कति हो?

    How old are you?

उमेर means age, and कति asks how much.

  5. तिमी कति वर्षको छौ?

    How old are you?

This is the friendly way to ask a boy or a man.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the ending को.

    म दस वर्ष छु।
    म दस वर्षको छु।

The age needs को: वर्षको means of years.
