किन
Asking Why
किन means why.
How It Works
किन is the word for why. It usually comes after the person or thing you ask about and somewhere before the verb, as in तपाईं किन नेपाली सिक्नुहुन्छ?
| Question | Possible answer |
|---|---|
| तपाईं किन नेपाली सिक्नुहुन्छ? | मलाई नेपाली मन पर्छ। |
| तिमी किन आउँदैनौ? | म व्यस्त छु। |
| बजार किन बन्द छ? | आज बिदा छ। |
With a negative verb, किन often shows surprise or concern, as in तिमी किन आउँदैनौ? (why are you not coming?).
In a longer reply, people add किनभने (because) at Level 2, and the short answer without it is natural too. In friendly talk, किन alone as a reply means why? or how come?.
किन is a different word from कुन (which) and कति (how much). Check the vowel sign after क when you read: कि, कु, क.
