-इहाल्नु

Doing Something at Once

Level 4Sounds Like ihālnu

The stem plus -इ plus हाल्नु shows an action done at once, without waiting or thinking.

How It Works

The verb हाल्नु normally means to put in or pour. After the -इ linker it becomes a helper that adds the feel of doing the action quickly, suddenly or all at once. The whole is one word.

VerbWith हाल्नु
भन्नुभनिहाल्यो (blurted out)
खानुखाइहाल्यो (ate it right up)
उठाउनुउठाइहालिन् (picked up at once)

It is used for actions that happen in a rush, often with strong feeling: रिसले ढोका बन्द गरिहालेँ (I slammed the door shut in anger).

The helper verb changes with the doer and the tense. The main verb keeps its stem, as in the other -इ compounds such as -इसक्नु and -इदिनु.
