Making Someone Do Something
The person who is made to act takes -ला: शिक्षक मुलांना मराठी शिकवतात.
How It Works
बसणे means “to sit”. बसवणे means “to make someone sit”. The new verb always has a person who causes the action, and that person is the subject of the sentence.

A few verbs change in another way: पिणे becomes पाजणे (give to drink), and खाणे becomes खाऊ घालणे (feed).
The person who is seated takes -ला: आजोबांनी मुलाला खुर्चीवर बसवले. Because मुलाला takes -ला and there is no other object, the past verb is neuter: बसवले. The teacher, the mother or the grandfather who causes the action takes -ने in the past.
बसवणे means that you seat someone yourself. बसायला लावणे means that you make someone sit down, and that person does the sitting. Not every verb has a causing form, so learn each one as you meet it.
The causing verb is a regular verb after that: it has its own past (बसवले), request (बसवा) and future (बसवीन).

The teacher teaches the children Marathi.
शिकवतात is the causing verb of शिकणे; the plural shows respect for the teacher.
- तो मुलांना हसवतो.
He makes the children laugh.
हसवतो is made from हसणे.
- मी आता मुलांना उठवतो.
I'll wake the children now. A man is speaking.
उठवतो ends in -तो because the speaker is a man.
- मी रोज बाळाला झोपवते.
I put the baby to sleep every day. A woman is speaking.
झोपवते ends in -ते because the speaker is a woman.
- आजोबांनी मुलाला खुर्चीवर बसवले.
Grandpa sat the boy on the chair.
बसवले is neuter because मुलाला takes -ला.
Common Mistakes
Using the plain verb for the causing meaning.
शिक्षक मुलांना मराठी शिकतात.शिक्षक मुलांना मराठी शिकवतात.शिकतात means “learn”; teaching needs शिकवतात.
Leaving out -व-.
आईने बाळाला झोपले.आईने बाळाला झोपवले.The mother puts the baby to sleep, so the verb is झोपवले.
