त्याचा / तिचा / त्यांचा

His, Her and Their

Level 1Sounds Like tyācā / ticā / tyān̄cā

त्यांचा also means his or her when you show respect.

How It Works

These three words work like माझा and -चा: the ending matches the thing owned.

OwnerMasculineFeminineNeuter
hisत्याचा फोनत्याची गाडीत्याचे घर
herतिचा फोनतिची गाडीतिचे घर
theirत्यांचा फोनत्यांची गाडीत्यांचे घर

Choose the owner first: त्याचा for a man, तिचा for a woman. Then choose the ending from the thing: गाडी is feminine, so त्याची गाडी.

For a teacher or an elder, use त्यांचा: त्यांचे घर पुण्यात आहे can mean His house is in Pune.

The word is the same for a person and a thing when you mean its: त्याचा रंग (its colour) uses the masculine form because रंग is masculine.
