Sound Joins in Formal Words

Level 6Sounds Like sandhī

Learners meet संधी in vocabulary, so the goal is to recognise the pattern and split the word.

How It Works

A few patterns explain most of the formal words you will read.

PatternJoinResult
same vowelsविद्या + आलयविद्यालय
अ + उ (after a consonant)सूर्य + उदयसूर्योदय
उ + another vowelसु + आगतस्वागत
consonant meeting a consonantसत् + जनसज्जन

With two आ or अ sounds, the result is a long आ. With आ or अ before उ, the result is ओ. With आ or अ before इ, the result is ए: महा + ईश becomes महेश.

Before a different vowel, उ turns into व: सु + आगत becomes स्वागत. Before some consonants, the final त् of some Sanskrit words changes to suit it: सत् + जन becomes सज्जन, and सत् + भाव becomes सद्भाव. Before क it stays, as in सत्कार.

Do not try to build these words yourself. Recognise the parts when you meet a formal word. A good dictionary gives the parts, and knowing them helps with new words like महोत्सव, सूर्योदय or सज्जन.

Examples (5)

There is a school in our village.

विद्या + आलय joins the two आ sounds into one.

Hundreds of artists took part in the festival.

Before sunrise, Grandfather goes for a walk.

The guests were welcomed with flowers.

    He is a gentleman.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the parts unmerged.

    The sounds merge: आ + उ becomes ओ.

  • Joining the parts with no change.

    अ + उ becomes ओ in this word.
