किंवा alone means "or"; adding एकतर makes it "either … or".

How It Works

Say एकतर, then the first choice, then किंवा, then the second choice. एकतर चहा घे किंवा कॉफी. (Have either tea or coffee.)

When the choices are whole clauses, each clause has its own verb. एकतर तू सांग किंवा मी सांगते. (Either you tell him or I will.) A woman is speaking here, so सांगते is the feminine form.

The second choice can also open with नाहीतर in the place of किंवा: एकतर घरी थांब, नाहीतर आमच्याबरोबर ये. The meaning is the same.

Keep the two choices in the same kind of word. After एकतर आज, the second choice is also a time word: उद्या. A short answer needs no verb: एकतर चहा किंवा कॉफी. (Tea or coffee, one of the two.)

Do not use आणि between the choices. आणि joins things you do together, and एकतर … किंवा picks one.

  5. एकतर मी घरी थांबतो किंवा तुमच्याबरोबर येतो.

    Either I stay at home or I come with you. A man is speaking.

    किंवा opens the second plan.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi pattern या तो … या.

    या तो चहा घे किंवा कॉफी.
    एकतर चहा घे किंवा कॉफी.

    या तो is Hindi. Marathi says एकतर.

  • Joining the choices with आणि.

    एकतर चहा घे आणि कॉफी.
    एकतर चहा घे किंवा कॉफी.

    आणि means both together. Use किंवा to choose one.
