Write the digits in groups of two after the first three: १,००,०००.

How It Works

WordDigitsExample
शंभर१००शंभर रुपये
हजार१,०००दोन हजार लोक
लाख१,००,०००वीस लाख रुपये
कोटी१,००,००,०००दोन कोटी रुपये

One लाख is a hundred हजार, and one कोटी is a hundred लाख.

Half steps have their own words, just like clock times: दीड लाख is 150,000, and अडीच हजार is 2,500.

Everyday Marathi says दहा लाख for 1,000,000 and शंभर कोटी for a billion.

Prices and statistics use Devanagari digits and commas after the last three digits and then every two digits: ५०,००० रुपये, १,००,००० रुपये. In speech, say the words: पन्नास हजार रुपये.

Questions use किती: याची किंमत किती आहे? (How much is this?) The answer is the number and रुपये: दोन हजार रुपये.

House prices and project costs use लाख and कोटी.

The noun after a count above one is plural: पाच हजार लोक, दहा लाख रुपये.
