Already Still and Not Yet

Веќе ја прочитав книгата. (I have already read the book.) Сѐ уште спие. (He is still sleeping.) Уште не знам. (I do not know yet.)

How It Works

Веќе: already. Something has happened, often sooner than expected: Веќе ја прочитав книгата. · Дали Ана веќе дојде? (Has Ana arrived already?) · Веќе сум готов. (I am ready already.)

Сѐ уште: still. A situation continues up to now: Сѐ уште спие. · Сѐ уште живеам во Скопје. Plain уште can mean the same: Уште спие.

Уште не: not yet. Put не right before the verb: Уште не знам. · Возот сѐ уште не стигна. (The train has not arrived yet.) With сѐ it sounds a little stronger.

Веќе не: no longer. With a negative, веќе means not any more: Веќе немам пари. (I have no money left.) · Нема веќе да одам таму. (I will not go there any more.)

Spelling. Write сѐ уште as two words with the grave mark on сѐ. Forms such as сеуште or се уште are spelling mistakes (The Marks on Ѐ and Ѝ).

    The verb ending does not show gender, so this can also mean she is still sleeping.

  5. Уште не знам.

    I do not know yet.

    Word by Word: Yet not I-know.

  6. Возот сѐ уште не стигна.

    The train has not arrived yet.

    Word by Word: Train-the still not arrived.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing сѐ уште as one word or without the grave mark.

    Сеуште спие.
    Сѐ уште спие.

    The standard spelling is two words, сѐ уште, with the grave mark on сѐ.

  • Using веќе не when you mean not yet.

    Веќе не знам.
    Уште не знам.

    To say "I do not know yet", use уште не. Веќе не знам means "I no longer know".
