This Morning and This Year

Level 3Sounds Like utrovo; večerva; godinava

Put the near article on a time word to say this morning, evening, summer or year: утрово, вечерва, летово, годинава.

How It Works

The near article from -ов; -ва; -во; -ве means "this … here". On a time word it means this period, the one we are in now.

Common forms:

  • утро → утрово — this morning
  • вечер → вечерва — this evening, tonight
  • ноќ → ноќва — tonight (this night)
  • недела → неделава — this week
  • месец → месецов — this month
  • лето → летово — this summer
  • зима → зимава — this winter
  • пролет → пролетва, есен → есенва — this spring, this autumn
  • година → годинава — this year

Each word takes the ending that matches its gender: neuter утро → -во, feminine вечер and година → -ва, masculine месец → -ов.

No preposition: like the time words in сега; денес; утре; вчера, they stand on their own: Вечерва одиме на кино. (not во вечерва).

Past, present or future: "this" period can be earlier today or later today. Утрово станав рано. (I got up early this morning.) Вечерва ќе готвам. (I will cook tonight.) Летово бевме на море. (We were at the seaside this summer.)

These days: the plural деновиве means "these days, lately": Деновиве сум многу зафатен.

Do not mix it up with -та: утрото or вечерта with the ordinary article means "the morning" or "that evening" in a story, not "this morning".

Common Mistakes

  • Using the ordinary article when you mean "this morning".

    Утрото пиев кафе со Ана.
    Утрово пиев кафе со Ана.

Утрото means "the morning" or "that morning" in a story. For this morning, today, use the near article: утрово.

  • Using the feminine ending on a neuter time word.

    Летова бевме на море.
    Летово бевме на море.

Лето is neuter (летото), so the near article is -во.

  • Adding во in front of the time word.

    Во вечерва одиме на кино.
    Вечерва одиме на кино.

Вечерва already means "this evening" and works like денес, so it needs no preposition.
