Months and Seasons

Level 2Sounds Like meseci i godišni vremin̂a

во јануари (in January), во зима (in winter), во пролет (in spring). Лете and зиме already mean in summer and in winter.

How It Works

The months are written in small letters: јануари, февруари, март, април, мај, јуни, јули, август, септември, октомври, ноември, декември.

The seasons (годишни времиња) have different genders, which shows in their articles:

  • пролет (spring) — feminine: пролетта (see женски именки на согласка)
  • лето (summer) — neuter: летото
  • есен (autumn) — feminine: есента
  • зима (winter) — feminine: зимата

Saying when: use во: во октомври, во зима, во лето. A month with a year also takes во: во мај 2024 година. A date with a day number takes на instead (see датуми: на први мај).

Лете and зиме are adverbs that already mean in summer and in winter. They are common for things that happen every year: Лете одиме на море. The phrase и лете и зиме means all year round. Do not add во to them.

With the article: when the season is the subject, it takes its article: Зимата е студена. With минат (last), следен (next) and овој (this), no preposition is used: минатата зима, следната пролет. For this summer and this winter, see утрово; вечерва; годинава.
