Според means according to: Според мене, филмот е досаден. (In my opinion, the film is boring.) Според законот means "according to the law".

How It Works

1. Whose opinion or news. Put the person or the source after според:

  • Според мене, филмот е досаден. (In my opinion, the film is boring.)
  • Според неа, продавницата се отвора во девет. (According to her, the shop opens at nine.)
  • Според прогнозата, утре ќе врне. (According to the forecast, it will rain tomorrow.)

2. Following a rule or plan. Според also means "in line with": според законот (by law), според планот (according to plan), според рецептот (following the recipe).

Pronouns. After според, use the full pronouns мене, тебе, него, неа, нас, вас, нив, never the short forms. See full object pronouns. You can also say по мое мислење (in my opinion).

No extra preposition. English says "according to", but Macedonian adds nothing: според законот, not според на законот.

Passing on news. When you report what a newspaper or another person says, the l-form is common: Според весниците, пожарот започнал синоќа. The l-form shows that you did not see it yourself. See reported forms. The fixed phrase според тоа means "so" or "therefore"; see drawing a conclusion.

    Word by Word: I-cook according-to recipe-the of grandma to-me.

  6. Според весниците, пожарот започнал синоќа.

    According to the newspapers, the fire started last night.

    Word by Word: According-to newspapers-the, fire-the started(reported) last-night.

    Започнал is the l-form. It shows that the speaker is passing on what the newspapers said.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a short pronoun after според.

    Според ме, филмот е досаден.
    Според мене, филмот е досаден.

    Short pronouns such as ме and те go with verbs. After a preposition like според, use the full pronoun: мене, тебе, него, неа.

  • Adding на because English says "according to".

    Според на законот, секој возач мора да носи појас.
    Според законот, секој возач мора да носи појас.

    Според already includes the meaning of "to". The noun comes straight after it.
