Nouns With a Disappearing Vowel
Some masculine nouns lose the е of their last syllable when a plural ending is added: старец → старци (old man), Македонец → Македонци, ветер → ветрови (wind).
How It Works
Nouns in -ец. Most nouns that end in the suffix -ец drop the е before the plural ending -и. Many of them name people: старец → старци (old man), Македонец → Македонци, Германец → Германци, Американец → Американци, борец → борци (fighter), ловец → ловци (hunter). Some name things: палец → палци (thumb), конец → конци (thread).
Other nouns. A few nouns drop an е before the ending -ови: ветер → ветрови. A few more drop an о instead: јазол → јазли (knot), нокот → нокти (nail).
Where the е stays. Nouns in -ец keep the е before the article: старецот, Македонецот. The е also stays in some words that only look similar: месец → месеци (month). So learn the plural together with the singular. The vocative of старец also loses it: старче.
