Македонец / Македонка
Nationalities
Тој е Македонец, таа е Македонка. The adjective has a small letter: македонска кујна, зборувам македонски.
How It Works
The most common pattern: -ец (man) · -ка (woman) · -ци (group):
- Македонец · Македонка · Македонци
- Германец · Германка · Германци
- Американец · Американка · Американци
- Албанец · Албанка · Албанци
- Италијанец · Италијанка · Италијанци
The е of -ец drops in the plural, as in именки со непостојано е. A group of women is Македонки, Германки.
Other patterns: Англичанец · Англичанка · Англичани; Французин · Французинка · Французи. Learn these as you meet them.
Capital or small letter: nouns for people of a country or nation are capitalized: Македонец, Германка. Adjectives made from them are not: македонски, германски, англиски. The name of a language is the adjective, so it is lowercase too: Зборувам англиски. (see зборувам македонски). People from a town are also written in small letters: скопјанец.
Using them: after сум, the noun needs no article: Јас сум Македонец. To name the country instead, use од каде си; од + место: Јас сум од Македонија. To describe things, use the adjective: македонско вино.
