Би требало да means "ought to" or "should": Би требало да се одмориш. (You ought to rest.) Возот би требало да стигне до пет. (The train should arrive by five.)

How It Works

Three levels of advice:

  • Мораш да се одмориш. — You must rest. (strong)
  • Треба да се одмориш. — You should rest. (direct)
  • Би требало да се одмориш. — You ought to rest. (gentle)

Two uses.

  • Advice or duty: Би требало да му се јавиме. (We ought to call him.) Не би требало да јадеш толку многу слатки. (You shouldn't eat so many sweets.)
  • Expectation: Возот би требало да стигне до пет. (The train should arrive by five.) Ова би требало да работи. (This should work.)

Form. Би and требало never change. The person is shown by the verb after да: би требало да одам / да одиш / да одиме. Не goes in front: не би требало да.

Looking back. Би требало да refers to now or later. For "should have", use требаше да; можеше да: Требаше да дојдеш вчера.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping да.

    Би требало се одмориш.
    Би требало да се одмориш.

    The second verb always comes after да: би требало да се одмориш.

  • Using би требало да for something that should have happened in the past.

    Вчера би требало да дојдеш.
    Вчера требаше да дојдеш.

    Би требало да looks at now or later. For "you should have come yesterday", use требаше да.
