な-adjectives

Level 1Sounds Like na

な-adjectives (also known as adjectival nouns) are descriptive words that behave like nouns. They require the particle な to connect to a noun (e.g., 静かな町) and a copula like です or だ to end a sentence (e.g., 町は静かです).

How It Works

な-adjectives, known in Japanese as 形容動詞(けいようどうし), are a vital part of the language. They are often composed of Kanji compounds or Katakana loanwords. In linguistics, they are sometimes called "adjectival nouns" because they conjugate similarly to nouns, and their true dictionary form technically includes the casual copula だ.

1. Modifying Nouns (Attributive Form)
To describe a noun in the present affirmative tense, you must place な between the adjective stem and the noun.

  • きれい (clean/pretty) + 部屋(へや)(room) → きれいな部屋
  • 有名(ゆうめい)(famous) + 歌手(かしゅ)(singer) → 有名な歌手

Note: Although words like きれい and 有名 end in the hiragana character い, they are exceptions and belong to the な-adjective group.

2. Ending a Sentence (Predicative Form)
When the adjective is the main point of the sentence, you use a copula. Here is how they conjugate in both polite and casual styles:

TensePolite (です)Casual (だ)
Present静かです静かだ
Negative静かじゃありません / 静かではありません静かじゃない / 静かではない
Past静かでした静かだった
Past Neg.静かじゃありませんでした / 静かではありませんでした / 静かじゃなかったです静かじゃなかった / 静かではなかった

3. Adverbial Form
To use a な-adjective to describe an action (as an adverb), attach the particle に to the adjective stem.

  • 静かに歩く(あるく)(To walk quietly)
  • 上手(じょうず)に書く(かく)(To write skillfully)

4. Connecting Adjectives (Te-form)
To connect a な-adjective to another adjective or clause in the affirmative, use で. To connect them in the negative, use じゃなくて / ではなくて.

  • きれいで静か(しずか)(Clean and quiet)
  • 有名(ゆうめい)で親切(しんせつ)(Famous and kind)
  • 静か(しずか)で、勉強(べんきょう)しやすい (It is quiet, and easy to study)
  • 静かじゃなくて、賑やか(にぎやか)(Not quiet, but lively)

Note that when connecting adjectives with で, the tense is determined by the end of the sentence (the で itself has no tense).

  • きれいで静かでした (It was clean and quiet)

Examples (5)

  1. 有名な歌手に会いました。

    I met a famous singer.

Word by Word: Famous singer (particle) met.

Here, 有名(ゆうめい) uses な to modify the noun 歌手(かしゅ).

  2. この部屋はとても静かです。

    This room is very quiet.

Word by Word: This room (topic) very quiet is.

静か(しずか) functions as the predicate, followed by the polite copula です.

  3. 昨日の試験は簡単だった。

    Yesterday's exam was easy.

Word by Word: Yesterday's exam (topic) easy was.

簡単(かんたん) is followed by だった, the casual past tense of the copula だ.

  4. ハンサムな人が好きです。

    I like handsome people.

Word by Word: Handsome person (subject) like is.

ハンサム is a Katakana loanword used as a な-adjective to modify 人(ひと).

  5. 静かに勉強してください。

    Please study quietly.

Word by Word: Quietly study please.

By changing な to に, the adjective 静か(しずか) becomes an adverb modifying the verb 勉強する(べんきょうする).

Common Mistakes

  • Treating 'sneaky' な-adjectives as い-adjectives.

    この花はきれいかったです。
    この花はきれいでした。

Words like きれい (pretty) and 有名 (famous) end in the sound 'i' but are actually な-adjectives. They cannot take い-adjective endings like 〜かった.

  • Forgetting the な when modifying a noun.

    静か町に行きました。
    静かな町に行きました。

You must include な to connect the adjective to the noun. Without it, the sentence is grammatically incomplete.

Learn This First

To understand な-adjectives, you first need to grasp the general concept of what an adjective is in Japanese. Additionally, because な-adjectives function very similarly to nouns and use the copula (だ/です) for predicates, familiarity with the basic copula is necessary.
