〜ば〜ほど
The More...the More
Use this pattern to describe a proportional relationship where an increase in one state or action leads to an increase in another.
How It Works
The 〜ば〜ほど pattern is used to express that as the degree of one thing changes, another thing changes in proportion. It is the Japanese equivalent of the English 'the more... the more...'. To express 'the less... the less...', the negative form 〜なければ〜ないほど is used.
Formation Rules:
- Verbs: [〜ば form] + [Dictionary form] + ほど
Example: 食べれば食べるほど(たべればたべるほど) (The more you eat...) - I-Adjectives: [〜ければ] + [Dictionary form] + ほど
Example: 安ければ安いほど(やすければやすいほど) (The cheaper it is...) - Na-Adjectives: [〜なら] + [〜な] + ほど OR [であれば] + [ある] + ほど
Example: 簡単なら簡単なほど(かんたんならかんたんなほど) (The simpler it is...) - Nouns: [であれば] + [ある] + ほど
Example: プロであればあるほど (The more of a professional one is...) - Negative Form (The less...): [〜なければ] + [〜ない] + ほど
Example: 使わなければ使わないほど(つかわなければつかわないほど) (The less you use it...)
In casual speech, the first half (the conditional part) is often omitted. For verbs and い-adjectives, use the dictionary form + ほど. For な-adjectives, you must retain the な (e.g., 簡単なほど - The simpler the better).
Examples (5)
- 日本語は話せば話すほど上手になります。
The more you speak Japanese, the better you will become.
Word by Word: Japanese (topic) if speak speak extent skillful become.
Shows the proportional relationship between speaking practice and skill improvement.
- アパートは駅から近ければ近いほど家賃が高い。
The closer the apartment is to the station, the higher the rent is.
Word by Word: Apartment (topic) station from if close close extent rent (subject) high.
Uses an i-adjective to show how distance affects price.
- 考えれば考えるほど、わからなくなってきた。
The more I think about it, the less I understand.
Word by Word: If think think extent, understand-not become-came.
Demonstrates that the result can be a negative change (becoming confused).
- 操作は簡単なら簡単なほどいいです。
The simpler the operation is, the better.
Word by Word: Operation (topic) simple if simple extent good is.
Shows the usage with a na-adjective.
- 使わなければ使わないほど、使いかたを忘れてしまう。
The less you use it, the more you end up forgetting how to use it.
Word by Word: If use-not use-not extent, usage (object) forget end up.
Shows that the pattern can be used with negative forms to mean 'the less... the more...'.
Common Mistakes
Using the wrong conditional form like 〜たら or 〜と.
食べたら食べるほど太る。食べれば食べるほど太る。This specific correlative structure strictly requires the ば-form (or なら for adjectives/nouns). You cannot substitute it with たら or と.
Forgetting the 'na' for na-adjectives before 'hodo'.
暇なら暇ほどいい。暇なら暇なほどいい。When using na-adjectives in the second half of the pattern, you must include the な before ほど.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The '〜ば〜ほど' pattern is a correlative structure meaning 'the more... the more'. It requires the ability to conjugate verbs and adjectives into the 'ba' conditional form, combined with the particle 'hodo' which indicates extent. Learners must repeat the same word in both parts of the construction.
