か
Question Marker
In Japanese, you don't change word order to ask a question; you simply add the particle か to the end of the sentence. In polite speech, it acts like a spoken question mark.
How It Works
The particle か is the standard way to form questions in Japanese. Unlike English, which requires changing the word order (e.g., 'You are' to 'Are you?'), Japanese keeps the sentence structure identical and simply appends か.
1. Usage in Polite Speech
In polite Japanese (using です or ます), か is the neutral and standard way to ask a question. It is used with both friends (in polite mode) and superiors.
- 学生(がくせい)です。 (I am a student.)
- 学生(がくせい)ですか。 (Are you a student?)
2. Usage in Casual Speech
In casual speech (plain form), adding か can sound quite blunt, masculine, or even aggressive. Friends typically use a rising intonation at the end of a sentence or the particle の to ask questions instead. When used casually, か often indicates a rhetorical question or a self-addressed realization (e.g., 'Is that so?').
3. The 'Da' Rule
A critical rule for beginners involves the casual copula だ. While you can say ですか, you cannot say だか. When asking a question with a noun or a な-adjective in the plain form, the だ must be dropped before adding か.
- Correct: 学生(がくせい)か?
- Incorrect: ×学生(がくせい)だか?
4. Punctuation
In formal Japanese writing, a period (。) is used after か. However, in modern casual writing, textbooks, and manga, the question mark (?) is frequently used for clarity.
Examples (5)
- これは本ですか。
Is this a book?
Word by Word: This / (topic) / book / is / (question)
A standard polite question using the copula です.
- 明日、学校に行きますか。
Are you going to school tomorrow?
Word by Word: Tomorrow / school / to / go / (question)
A polite question using a verb in the ます form.
- そうですか。
Is that so? / I see.
Word by Word: So / is / (question)
When said with a falling intonation, this is a common way to acknowledge new information.
- 田中さんは学生か。
Is Tanaka a student?
Word by Word: Tanaka / (topic) / student / (question)
A casual/plain form question. Note that the copula だ is omitted before か.
- いつ行きますか。
When will you go?
Word by Word: When / go / (question)
か is used at the end of sentences containing question words like いつ (when), どこ (where), or 何 (what).
Common Mistakes
Using 'da ka' with nouns or na-adjectives.
それは本当だか?それは本当か?In the plain form, the copula だ must be removed before adding the question particle か.
Overusing 'ka' in casual conversation with friends.
食べるか?食べる?Using か with the dictionary form of a verb can sound overly masculine or harsh. In casual settings, simply using a rising intonation is much more natural.
