boleh jadi

It May Be That

Level 5

Boleh jadi means perhaps or it is possible that. It presents a possibility, often in reflective writing, without itself requiring evidence or a particular degree of probability.

How It Works

The phrase boleh jadi is composed of boleh (may) and jadi (become/happen). However, in this specific combination, it loses its literal meaning of 'allowed to happen' and becomes a single unit of meaning indicating epistemic possibility.

1. Syntactic Position
It most frequently appears at the very beginning of a sentence to modify the entire statement. It can also appear before the predicate (the verb or adjective) in more formal prose.

2. Register and Tone
It can have a more reflective or literary tone than mungkin or bisa jadi, depending on context. It is not confined to writing and is not wrong in conversation. It appears in:

  • Academic writing (as a hedging device)
  • News editorials and analytical essays
  • Classic and contemporary literature

3. Interaction with Aspect
It can be combined with aspect markers like akan (will) or sudah (already) to locate a possibility prospectively or as already holding. Sudah marks already, not a grammatical past tense.

Examples (4)

  1. Boleh jadi ia akan menolak tawaran itu.

It may be that he/she will refuse that offer.

Word by Word: May happen he/she will refuse offer that.

Here, 'boleh jadi' introduces a future possibility using 'akan'.

  2. Boleh jadi ia telah tersohor ke seluruh negeri.

It may be that he/she has become famous throughout the whole country.

Word by Word: May happen he/she already famous to all country.

This example shows the pattern used in a literary context to describe a possible current state.

  3. Boleh jadi mereka lupa akan janji tersebut.

It is possible that they forgot about that promise.

Word by Word: May happen they forget about promise mentioned.

Boleh jadi presents forgetting the promise as possible. The sentence does not specify an observed failure to arrive or act; any such explanation comes from context.

  4. Boleh jadi masalah ini lebih rumit daripada yang kita duga.

It may be that this problem is more complicated than we suspected.

Word by Word: May happen problem this more complicated than which we suspect.

Used here in an analytical tone to propose a deeper explanation for a situation.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the possibility expression when granting permission to take a role.

    Boleh jadi kamu ketua kelompok.
    Kamu boleh menjadi ketua kelompok.

For the intended permission to become group leader, kamu boleh menjadi is clear. Initial Boleh jadi kamu ketua kelompok instead means perhaps you are the group leader. The latter is grammatical with that different meaning. An ordinary boleh plus jadi sequence can also be parsed literally in other contexts; the fixed possibility use does not ban every literal combination.

The pattern 'boleh jadi' is a compound expression used to introduce possibility. It combines the modal 'boleh' (permission/possibility) with 'jadi' (to become/happen) to function similarly to 'mungkin' (maybe) in formal or literary contexts.
