Possibility with Mungkin

Level 3

Use mungkin for maybe or might. Two common positions are before the predicate and at the start of the sentence; an afterthought can also place it at the end.

How It Works

In Indonesian, mungkin is used to indicate that the speaker is not 100% certain about what they are saying. It is a neutral term suitable for both formal and casual contexts.

1. Placement
There are two common positions for mungkin:

  • Before the Predicate: Placed between the subject and the verb/adjective. Example: Dia mungkin sibuk (He might be busy).
  • Sentence Initial: Placed at the very beginning to modify the entire thought. Example: Mungkin dia sibuk (Maybe he is busy).

2. Morphology and Variations
While mungkin is the root adverb, it appears in other forms:

  • Mungkin saja: Adds emphasis, similar to 'It's quite possible' or 'Just maybe'.
  • Mungkinkah: Uses the -kah suffix to create a formal or rhetorical question ('Is it possible that...?').
  • Kemungkinan: The noun form meaning 'possibility', often used with the ke-...-an circumfix.
  • Memungkinkan: A verb form using the meN-...-kan causative circumfix, meaning 'to make possible' or 'to enable'. Example: Teknologi ini memungkinkan kita bekerja dari rumah (This technology makes it possible for us to work from home).

3. Distinctions
Learners should distinguish mungkin from bisa (ability) and boleh (permission). Mungkin presents a possibility; boleh normally grants permission in the permission model. Bisa also has situational possibility uses, so ability is not its only meaning. Another common way to express possibility is the phrase bisa jadi.

Afterthoughts and Predicates: Dia akan datang, mungkin is a possible afterthought, not a word-order error merely because mungkin comes last. For a concise statement of possibility, use Itu mungkin or Hal itu mungkin terjadi; the extra word terjadi adds an event and should not be presented as a meaning-preserving spelling correction of Itu adalah mungkin. With negation, mungkin tidak datang means possibly not coming, whereas tidak mungkin datang means not possible to come.

Examples (4)

  1. Mungkin dia akan datang terlambat karena macet.

Maybe he will arrive late because of traffic.

Word by Word: Maybe he will come late because traffic jam.

Here, 'mungkin' is placed at the start of the sentence to qualify the entire statement.

  2. Saya mungkin tidak bisa ikut rapat besok.

I might not be able to join the meeting tomorrow.

Word by Word: I maybe not can follow meeting tomorrow.

In this example, 'mungkin' is placed after the subject 'saya' and before the negation 'tidak'.

  3. Hal itu mungkin saja terjadi kalau kita tidak hati-hati.

That could just possibly happen if we aren't careful.

Word by Word: Thing that maybe just happen if we not careful.

The phrase 'mungkin saja' adds a layer of emphasis to the possibility.

  4. Mungkinkah mereka sudah sampai di Jakarta?

Is it possible they have already arrived in Jakarta?

Word by Word: Possible-kah they already arrive in Jakarta?

The suffix -kah turns 'mungkin' into a formal question about possibility.
