mengapa / kenapa

Why Questions

Level 1

Indonesian has two main ways to ask 'why': mengapa (formal) and kenapa (informal). While they both ask for a reason, kenapa is much more common in speech and can also mean 'What's wrong?'

How It Works

In Indonesian, choosing between 'why' words depends on the social situation:

  • Mengapa: This is a formal interrogative. It is derived from apa (what) with the meN- prefix. You will see it in newspapers, academic essays, and formal speeches. It can also occur in speech when that register fits.
  • Kenapa: This form is common in conversation and is also recognized in standard grammar. Etymologically, it comes from kena (to be hit/affected) + apa.

The 'What's Wrong' Function:
A unique feature of kenapa is its ability to function as 'What happened?' or 'What is wrong?'. For example, if a friend looks sad, you ask 'Kamu kenapa?'. Learn this as a common conversational model. Mengapa can ask for a reason, and should not simply be treated as a word forbidden in conversation.

Sentence Position:
Both usually start a sentence, but in casual speech, kenapa often moves to the end for emphasis (e.g., 'Belum makan, kenapa?' - 'Haven't eaten yet, why?').

Examples (4)

  1. Mengapa pemerintah menaikkan harga bahan bakar?

Why is the government raising fuel prices?

Word by Word: Why government raise price material fuel?

This uses 'mengapa' because it is a formal question about government policy.

  2. Kenapa kamu tidak datang ke pesta kemarin?

Why didn't you come to the party yesterday?

Word by Word: Why you not come to party yesterday?

This uses 'kenapa' because it is a common question between friends or acquaintances.

  3. Eh, kamu kenapa? Kok menangis?

Hey, what's wrong with you? Why (how come) are you crying?

Word by Word: Eh, you what-happened? How-come cry?

Here, 'kenapa' means 'what happened' or 'what's wrong'. The particle kok adds a sense of surprise.

  4. Kenapa nggak bilang dari tadi?

Why didn't you say so earlier?

Word by Word: Why not say from earlier?

A very common casual expression using 'kenapa' and the colloquial negation 'nggak'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'mengapa' to ask 'what's wrong?'

    Anda mengapa?
    Anda kenapa? / Ada apa?

Kamu kenapa? or Ada apa? is a clear conversational model for What is wrong? Mengapa is useful for asking the reason for a stated situation; choose the intended kind of question.

  • Assuming kenapa is always nonstandard.

    Kenapa inflasi meningkat di Indonesia?
    Mengapa inflasi meningkat di Indonesia?

Tata Bahasa Baku Bahasa Indonesia includes both mengapa and kenapa in standard questions. Mengapa is more formal and is a suitable choice for an academic essay; this register preference does not make kenapa universally nonstandard.

Learn This First

To use 'mengapa' and 'kenapa' effectively, learners should first understand basic Indonesian sentence structure (SVO) and how to form simple questions using other interrogatives like 'apa'. Familiarity with negation is also helpful as 'why' questions frequently ask about the absence of an action or state.
