Something Is Being Done (Það Er Verið Að)
Það er verið að byggja nýjan skóla. (A new school is being built.) Það er búið að loka búðinni. (The shop has been closed.)
How It Works
In progress: það er verið að. Use it when something is happening now and the doer does not matter:
- Það er verið að byggja nýjan skóla. (A new school is being built.)
- Past: Það var verið að gera við veginn. (The road was being repaired.)
Finished: það er búið að. Use it when something has already been done:
- Það er búið að loka búðinni. (The shop has been closed.)
- Future: Það verður búið að laga þetta á morgun. (This will have been fixed by tomorrow.)
Compare the personal forms. With a person as subject, búinn agrees: Ég er búinn að borga, Hún er búin að borga. Without a person, it is always Það er búið að borga.
The object keeps its case. The object depends on the infinitive, not on vera: byggja takes the accusative (nýjan skóla), and loka takes the dative (búðinni).
Það only comes first. When another word starts the sentence, það drops out: Nú er verið að sýna myndina. In a question: Er búið að borga reikninginn? See the placeholder það.
This construction is standard and very common. Do not confuse it with the new impersonal construction, það var barið mig, which careful Icelandic avoids.

Common Mistakes
Putting the object in the nominative.
Það er verið að byggja nýr skóli.Það er verið að byggja nýjan skóla.The school is the object of byggja, so it stays accusative: nýjan skóla.
Using the masculine búinn with það.
Það er búinn að loka búðinni.Það er búið að loka búðinni. With the placeholder það, the form is always the neuter búið.
Changing the case that the verb needs.
Það er búið að loka búðina.Það er búið að loka búðinni.loka always takes the dative, also in this construction.
