It Is ... to (Það Er Gott Að)

Level 3

Það er + adjective + að means it is ... to or it is ... that: Það er gaman að læra íslensku.

How It Works

The pattern. Það er + adjective + að + what you are judging:

  • Það er gaman að læra íslensku. (It's fun to learn Icelandic.)
  • Það er mikilvægt að hvíla sig. (It's important to rest.)
  • Það var leiðinlegt að missa af þér. (It was a pity to miss you.)

það here is only a placeholder that fills the first place (expletive það).

The adjective is neuter. It does not agree with anything else, so use the neuter singular: gott, erfitt, auðvelt, dýrt, mikilvægt, leiðinlegt, nauðsynlegt. gaman is a noun and stays the same.

Infinitive or clause. After að you can use an infinitive (að + infinitive) or a whole clause with a subject (að (that)):

  • Það er gott að vera heima. (It's good to be home.)
  • Það er gott að þú komst. (It's good that you came.)

After words about need or importance, the verb in the clause is usually in the subjunctive: Það er mikilvægt að þú komir á réttum tíma, not kemur. See present subjunctive.

Saying who. Add fyrir + accusative: Það er erfitt fyrir mig að vakna snemma.

Questions and fronting. When the verb comes first, or something else starts the sentence, the placeholder það disappears:

  • Er dýrt að búa í Reykjavík? (Is it expensive to live in Reykjavík?)
  • Stundum er erfitt að vakna. (Sometimes it's hard to wake up.)

Common Mistakes

  • Using a non-neuter form of the adjective.

Það er mikilvæg að hvíla sig.
Það er mikilvægt að hvíla sig.

The adjective does not agree with any noun here, so it takes the neuter form: mikilvægt, gott, erfitt.

  • Leaving out að.

    Það er gaman læra íslensku.
Það er gaman að læra íslensku.

The infinitive needs að in front of it, just like after most other words.
