það With an Indefinite Subject
Það keypti einhver bókina. (Someone bought the book.) það takes first place and the real subject einhver comes after the verb.
How It Works
Which subjects. Only indefinite ones: einhver, enginn, margir, nokkrir, numbers and nouns without the article.
- Það býr enginn í þessu húsi. (Nobody lives in this house.)
- Það er einhver að banka. (Someone is knocking.)
- Það hafa margir ferðamenn komið til Íslands. (Many tourists have come to Iceland.)
A definite subject such as maðurinn, Jón or hún stays in first place: Maðurinn kom.
Where the subject goes. Right after the finite verb, before a participle or infinitive: Það hefur einhver tekið hjólið mitt. (Someone has taken my bike.) An object follows as usual: Það keypti einhver bókina.
Agreement. The verb agrees with the real subject, not with það: Það kom einn maður. Það komu tveir menn.
When það disappears. Following verb-second word order, það is only a filler for first place. If something else comes first, it goes: Í gær komu margir gestir. In a yes/no question it is not used either: Kom einhver? In an að-clause it can stay: Ég held að það hafi einhver hringt.

Common Mistakes
Making the verb agree with það instead of the real subject.
Það kom margir gestir.Það komu margir gestir. The verb agrees with the real subject, margir gestir, which is plural: komu.
Using það with a definite subject.
Það fór maðurinn heim.Maðurinn fór heim.maðurinn is definite, so it cannot follow the verb after það. Put it first.
Keeping það after another word has taken first place.
Í gær það komu margir gestir.Í gær komu margir gestir.það only fills first place. When Í gær comes first, það goes and the verb comes second.
