Was and Were

Level 3

היה and its personal forms put a noun, adjective or place description in the past. A regular present sentence with no is needs היה when its time changes.

How It Works

The Past Forms

Learn אני הייתי, אתה היית, את היית, הוא היה, היא הייתה, אנחנו היינו, אתם הייתם, אתן הייתן and הם/הן היו. The two singular היית forms have different pronunciations. הייתי and היינו do not distinguish the subject’s gender; an accompanying adjective still does.

States and Places

Use היה with a noun description, adjective or place phrase: היא הייתה מורה, she was a teacher; הוא היה בבית, he was at home. Put לא before the past verb to deny the statement. Do not add a second present-tense הוא merely to translate English was.

Had and There Was

In standard existential possession, היה agrees with the thing possessed: היה לי ספר, הייתה לי מחברת, היו לי ספרים. The ל-form identifies the possessor, not the agreeing subject. Conversational definite possessions can follow a different accusative pattern; learn that separately rather than replacing every היה with יש.

Examples (4)

  1. אתמול הייתי עייפה.

    I was tired yesterday.

The female speaker uses הייתי with feminine עייפה.

  2. הם היו בבית.

    They were at home.

    היו marks the plural subject.

  3. היא לא הייתה מורה.

    She was not a teacher.

    לא negates the past statement.

  4. הייתה לי מחברת.

    I had a notebook.

הייתה agrees with feminine מחברת, and לי identifies the possessor.

Common Mistakes

  • Making past possession agree with the possessor rather than the standard possessed noun.

    היה לי מחברת.
    הייתה לי מחברת.

In this standard pattern, feminine מחברת controls הייתה.
