היה צריך + Infinitive
Past Obligation and Unfulfilled Advice
הייתי צריך ללכת means I needed to go or I had to go in a suitable past context. Whether the action happened comes from the surrounding message.
How It Works
Match the Person
Use הייתי צריך for a male speaker and הייתי צריכה for a female speaker. Third-person forms include הוא היה צריך and היא הייתה צריכה. For groups, use הם היו צריכים or הן היו צריכות.
The Needed Action
The action stays an infinitive: היה צריך ללמוד, הייתה צריכה להסביר. The past be form supplies the past reference, while צריך supplies necessity. Negate the necessity with לא: לא הייתי צריך ללכת, I did not need to go.
Obligation or Unfulfilled Advice
Context can make היית צריך להתקשר mean you should have called, especially when a missed action is discussed. A factual statement of necessity can instead describe an action that happened: הייתי צריכה לעבוד, ולכן נשארתי בבית. Use the actual outcome, rather than treating the construction as proof of failure.
Examples (4)
- אתמול הייתי צריכה לעבוד.
I had to work yesterday.
The female speaker uses צריכה.
- הם היו צריכים ללמוד.
They needed to study.
Plural past be combines with masculine plural צריכים.
- לא הייתי צריך ללכת.
I did not need to go.
לא negates the necessity.
- היית צריך להתקשר, אבל לא התקשרת.
You should have called, but you did not.
The second clause explicitly establishes the missed action.
Common Mistakes
Using masculine צריך with a stated female subject.
היא הייתה צריך ללמוד.היא הייתה צריכה ללמוד.The personal adjective-like צריך agrees with היא.
