יהיה and its related forms mean will be in a suitable sentence. The subject determines the form; in standard possession, the possessed thing controls agreement.

How It Works

The Common Future Forms

Learn אני אהיה, אתה תהיה, את תהיי, הוא יהיה, היא תהיה, אנחנו נהיה, אתם/אתן תהיו and הם/הן יהיו. Masculine you and she share תהיה. The female singular addressee uses תהיי. Literary feminine plural alternatives may occur in formal texts.

A Future Predicate

Use the future form with a noun, adjective or place phrase: היא תהיה מורה; מחר נהיה בבית. An adjective still agrees separately: אני אהיה עייפה for a female speaker and אני אהיה עייף for a male speaker. Put לא before the future verb to negate it.

Existence and Possession

Standard יהיה לי זמן, תהיה לי מחברת and יהיו לי ספרים agree with זמן, מחברת and ספרים. The possessor’s ל-form stays the same. Future existence also uses יהיה without a possessor, as in יהיה זמן לדבר, there will be time to talk.

  • Using the masculine singular future with a standard feminine possessed noun.

    יהיה לי מחברת.
    תהיה לי מחברת.

    In this standard construction, feminine מחברת controls תהיה.
