הייתי + Participle
Past Habits and Repeated Actions
הייתי הולכת can mean I used to go when the sentence describes a past habit. The same structure can express a hypothetical would meaning in another context.
How It Works
A Past Routine
Combine the subject’s past היה form with an agreeing present-form participle: הוא היה הולך, היא הייתה הולכת, הם היו הולכים and הן היו הולכות. A phrase such as פעם or כל יום makes repetition explicit.
Two Agreement Jobs
הייתי is the same for a male and female speaker, but the participle differs: הייתי הולך or הייתי הולכת. אנחנו היינו נפגשות describes a female speaker group, while היינו נפגשים describes a male or mixed group.
Context Gives the Reading
Do not translate every היה plus participle as used to. In a hypothetical sentence it can mean would. A single completed event commonly uses a simple past form such as הלכתי. Simple past can also describe repeated events when context supplies the habit; this construction is one useful way to present that habit.
