הייתי יכול + Infinitive
Past Ability and Conditional Possibility
הייתי יכול can express a past possibility or a conditional could. The participle agrees with the person, and the possible action stays an infinitive.
How It Works
Person and Agreement
Use הייתי יכול for a male speaker and הייתי יכולה for a female speaker. Other forms include היא הייתה יכולה and הם היו יכולים. The infinitive does not change: הייתי יכולה להגיע.
Possibility Is Not Completion
The sentence says that an action was or would be possible. It does not prove the action happened. Add context when the outcome matters: הייתי יכול לבוא, אבל נשארתי בבית.
Real Past or Hypothetical?
In a former situation, הייתי יכול להגיע לכל מקום ברגל can describe a real past capability. With an unreal condition, הייתי יכול לעזור means I would be able to help. Simple past יכולתי is another common way to express I could or was able to. These readings require the surrounding situation rather than a separate tense assigned to every two-word combination.
