ვზივარ/ვდგავარ/ვწევარ
Sitting, Standing and Lying
Georgian has verbs for being in a position: ვზივარ (I am sitting), ვდგავარ (I am standing), ვწევარ (I am lying).
How It Works
| Person | Sitting | Standing | Lying |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | ვზივარ | ვდგავარ | ვწევარ |
| you | ზიხარ | დგახარ | წევხარ |
| he, she | ზის | დგას | წევს |
English often says is sitting, is standing or is lying. Georgian uses one verb for each position.
These verbs describe a position, not a movement. ზის means someone is already sitting. Sitting down and standing up are different verbs.
They go well with words for places: სკამზე (on the chair), დივანზე (on the sofa), ფანჯარასთან (by the window).
A useful question is სად ზიხარ? (Where are you sitting?)
For several people, the sitting verb changes completely: ბავშვები სხედან (the children are sitting). That form comes later, so for now use these verbs with one person or animal.
