უ-...-ესი makes a strong superlative: უდიდესი (the greatest), უძველესი (the oldest).

How It Works

უ-...-ესი (u-...-esi) is the superlative of written and careful Georgian:

It can mean the most, as in შხარა საქართველოს უმაღლესი მწვერვალია (Shkhara is Georgia's highest peak), or simply extremely, as in ეს უმნიშვნელოვანესი საკითხია (this is a very important question).

It goes well with ერთ-ერთი (one of): ერთ-ერთი უძველესი ქალაქი (one of the oldest towns).

Good has a special form, საუკეთესო (best). In everyday talk, people more often say ყველაზე with the plain adjective: ყველაზე დიდი (the biggest).

Common Mistakes

  • Building a superlative from კარგი.

    ეს უკარგესი ხაჭაპურია.
    ეს საუკეთესო ხაჭაპურია.

    კარგი has no უ-...-ესი form. The best is საუკეთესო.
