Nouns for Qualities

Put სი- in front of a describing word and -ე at the end to make a noun for its quality: მაღალი (high), სიმაღლე (height).

How It Works

Many describing words become nouns for a quality with სი- in front and -ე at the end. მაღალი (high, tall) gives სიმაღლე (simaghle, height).

The describing word drops its -ი. Words such as მაღალი, წითელი and მართალი also lose the vowel before their last letter: სიმაღლე, სიწითლე, სიმართლე. A few words end in -ო instead of -ე, such as სითბო and სიტკბო, so learn those with the word.

Not every quality noun is built this way. Many use -ობა, which you met at Level 4: ჯანმრთელი (healthy) gives ჯანმრთელობა (health). A few სი- nouns come from verbs and end in -ული: სიყვარული (love), სიხარული (joy).

These are ordinary nouns, so they take every case ending: სიმაღლის, სიცივეში.

    This building is 100 meters tall.

    სიმაღლე comes from მაღალი, which loses a vowel.

  2. ზამთარში ბუხრის სითბო მიყვარს.

    In winter I love the warmth of the fireplace.

    სითბო comes from თბილი and ends in -ო.

  3. სიმართლე მითხარი.

    Tell me the truth.

    სიმართლე comes from მართალი (true).

  4. სიღნაღი თავისი სილამაზით არის ცნობილი.

    Sighnaghi is famous for its beauty.

    The quality noun takes the instrumental -ით like any noun.

  5. ამ სიცივეში გარეთ არ გავალ.

    I won't go out in this cold.

    სიცივე comes from ცივი and takes -ში.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the vowel that the describing word loses.

    ამ შენობის სიმაღალე 100 მეტრია.
    ამ შენობის სიმაღლე 100 მეტრია.

    მაღალი loses its second ა in the noun: სიმაღლე, just as წითელი gives სიწითლე.
