მხოლოდ
Only
მხოლოდ means only and goes before the word it limits.
How It Works
მხოლოდ (mkholod) means only. Its place in the sentence matters, because it limits the word right after it.
| Georgian | English |
|---|---|
| მხოლოდ ნინო მოდის. | Only Nino is coming. |
| ნინო მხოლოდ შაბათს მოდის. | Nino only comes on Saturdays. |
| მხოლოდ ერთი ძმა მყავს. | I have only one brother. |
In the first sentence, მხოლოდ is about who comes. In the second, it is about when.
In a café, მხოლოდ is a polite way to keep an order short: მხოლოდ ჩაი მინდა, მადლობა (I just want tea, thanks).
In speech you will also hear მარტო with the same meaning. მარტო can also mean alone, so მხოლოდ is clearer when you are learning.
