He or She, In Writing

Level 5Sounds Like igi

იგი is a formal, written word for he or she: იგი 1950 წელს დაიბადა (he was born in 1950).

How It Works

იგი (igi) means he, she or it, like ის. It belongs to books, articles, life stories and the news:

  • იგი 1950 წელს დაიბადა. (He was born in 1950.)
  • იგი თბილისის უნივერსიტეტში სწავლობდა. (She studied at Tbilisi University.)

Use იგი only where ის would be in the nominative, most often as the subject of a present-group verb or a becoming verb, or before არის. For the other cases, use the forms of ის:

CaseForm
nominativeიგი (or ის)
ergativeმან
dativeმას
genitiveმისი

So a text may say: რუსთაველი დიდი პოეტი იყო. იგი „ვეფხისტყაოსნის“ ავტორია. მან ეს პოემა მეთორმეტე საუკუნეში დაწერა.

In conversation, იგი sounds bookish, so keep ის there.
