jes / ne
Yes and No
Two answer words.
How It Works
The words jes and ne answer a yes-or-no question. Each one is a complete answer.
| Question | Yes | No |
|---|---|---|
| Ĉu vi komprenas min? | Jes, mi komprenas vin. | Ne, mi ne komprenas vin. |
| Ĉu ŝi estas hejme? | Jes, ŝi estas hejme. | Ne, ŝi ne estas hejme. |
You can answer with just Jes! or Ne!. People often add a full sentence for clarity. After ne the sentence has its own ne again, because the answer repeats the denial.
Do not use jes in the middle of a sentence to stress that something is true. That job belongs to the little word ja. For now, keep jes for answers.
Examples (3)
- Ĉu Kenji estas en Tokio? Jes, li estas en Tokio.
Is Kenji in Tokyo? Yes, he is in Tokyo.
Jes starts the positive answer.
- Ĉu vi trinkas kafon? Ne, mi ne trinkas kafon.
Do you drink coffee? No, I do not drink coffee.
Ne answers, and the sentence repeats ne before the verb.
- Ĉu Ewa kaj Pedro estas amikoj? Jes!
Are Ewa and Pedro friends? Yes!
Jes alone is a complete answer.
