estas la + Ordinal
Telling the Time
Ask kioma horo, and answer estas la plus an ordinal.
How It Works
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Kioma horo estas? | What time is it? |
| Estas la tria. | It is three o'clock. |
| Estas la tria kaj dek. | It is ten past three. |
| Estas la sepa kaj duono. | It is half past seven. |
| Estas la oka kaj kvarono. | It is a quarter past eight. |
| Estas dek minutoj antaŭ la oka. | It is ten minutes to eight. |
Hours are ordinal numbers: tria, naŭa, dek-dua. The full phrase is la tria horo, but the word horo is often left out. Say la before the hour every time.
To ask, use kiom with -a: kioma means which one in the row, and the answer is an ordinal.
For minutes after the hour, add kaj and the number: la tria kaj dek. For thirty minutes say duono (half), and for fifteen say kvarono (quarter).
For minutes before the hour, say how many minutes and use antaŭ: dek minutoj antaŭ la oka.
