ĉe
At and by
Ĉe means at or near, and also at someone's place.
How It Works
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ni sidas ĉe la tablo. | We sit at the table. |
| Ana staras ĉe la pordo. | Ana stands at the door. |
| Mi loĝas ĉe Kofi. | I am staying at Kofi's place. |
| Ĉe ni estas varme. | Where we are, it is warm. |
Ĉe shows a close position. It does not mean that two things touch, although they often do. Apud is narrower: it usually means beside, to the left or right.
Before a person or a pronoun, ĉe shows that person's home or usual place: ĉe mi is at my place, and ĉe ni can mean where we live or where we are. So mi loĝas ĉe Kofi fits a stay with a host.
To say that you live in a country or a city, use en: a country or city is a space you are in.
