همیشه، گاهی، هیچ‌وقت

Saying How Often

Level 2

Only هیچ‌وقت needs a negative verb.

How It Works

These three words tell how frequently something happens. Each one usually stands after the subject and before the rest of the verb phrase.

WordMeaningExample
همیشهalwaysما همیشه چای سبز می‌خوریم.
گاهیsometimesگاهی به پارک می‌روم.
هیچ‌وقتneverاو هیچ‌وقت دیر نمی‌آید.

A time phrase can open the sentence, and the frequency word stays beside the verb: جمعه‌ها گاهی به باغ بابر می‌رویم.

هیچ‌وقت needs a negative verb. In the past it is هیچ‌وقت نرفتم (I never went). The sentence has one plain never, and the verb carries the negative.

همیشه and گاهی usually go with a positive verb. A negative verb is possible: گاهی نمی‌آیم means sometimes I do not come.

Add a time of day to be exact. صبح‌ها (in the mornings), شب‌ها (at night) and جمعه‌ها (on Fridays) show something that repeats: صبح‌ها همیشه چای می‌خورم means I always have tea in the mornings.
