Nothing and Nobody

In a statement, هیچ goes with a negative verb, and the answer هیچ alone means nothing.

English says Nobody came with a positive verb. Dari makes the verb negative too: هیچ کس نیامد, word for word nobody didn't come. The two negatives belong together, and the sentence means one no.

The negative verb can be in any tense: هیچ کس نمی‌آید (nobody comes), هیچ کس نیامد (nobody came), هیچ کس نیامده است (nobody has come). The positive partners are کسی (someone) and چیزی (something).

A short answer can be هیچ alone: چه گفت؟ هیچ. (What did he say? Nothing.)

  5. هیچ کتابی در بازار پیدا نکردم.

    I couldn't find any book in the bazaar.

    هیچ stands before a noun, and the verb is negative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a positive verb with هیچ.

    هیچ کس آمد.
    هیچ کس نیامد.

    In a statement, هیچ needs a negative verb, so add نـ to the verb.

  • Using a positive verb after هیچ‌وقت.

    من هیچ‌وقت چای می‌خورم.
    من هیچ‌وقت چای نمی‌خورم.

    هیچ‌وقت means never, so the verb must be negative. In the present, that is نمی‌.
