به گفتهٔ و طبق
Naming the Source
Use به گفتهٔ for a person who spoke, and طبق or بر اساس for a report, a law or figures.
How It Works
News and reports tell the reader who said it. Dari has three phrases for this. Each one opens the sentence, and a comma follows the name.

گفته ends in a silent ه, so به گفتهٔ takes the ezafe mark ـهٔ before the name. طبق and بر اساس take the name directly: طبق گزارش, بر اساس معلومات.
The statement after the comma is an ordinary sentence with its normal tense: به گفتهٔ مسئولان پوهنتون، امتحانات از روز شنبه آغاز می‌شود.
Choose the phrase by what the name is. A person or an office speaks, so use به گفتهٔ. A paper, a law or a table of figures informs, so use طبق or بر اساس.
The sentence needs no verb of saying, because the opening phrase already names the speaker.

The ezafe ـهٔ joins به گفتهٔ to مسئولان.
- طبق گزارش ادارهٔ هواشناسی، هفتهٔ آینده هوا سردتر می‌شود.
According to the weather office's report, the weather gets colder next week.
طبق goes with a report, گزارش.
- بر اساس معلومات شاروالی، در این شهر پنجاه پارک وجود دارد.
According to the municipality's information, this city has fifty parks.
بر اساس goes with information.
- طبق قانون ترافیک، هر دریور باید جواز داشته باشد.
According to the traffic law, every driver must have a license.
طبق goes with a law.
Common Mistakes
Writing به طبق for "according to".
به طبق گزارش، فردا برف می‌بارد.طبق گزارش، فردا برف می‌بارد.The phrase is طبق alone, with no به before it.
