Must and Must Not

Level 3

باید never changes for the person. The subjunctive verb after it shows who must.

How It Works

Personmustmust not
منباید برومنباید بروم
توباید بروینباید بروی
اوباید برودنباید برود
ماباید برویمنباید برویم
شماباید برویدنباید بروید
آن‌هاباید بروندنباید بروند

باید also gives advice, like should: باید زود بخوابی (you should go to bed early).

نباید forbids: نباید در سرک بدوی (you must not run in the street). To say that something is not needed, Dari says لازم نیست: لازم نیست بیایید (you don't have to come).

باید and شاید look alike and differ by one letter. باید is must, and شاید is maybe.

A time or place word can stand between باید and the verb: باید فردا بروم. A question uses the same words: باید بروم؟ (Must I go?)

Examples (5)

  1. باید پیش داکتر بروم.

I must go to see the doctor.

باید is followed by بروم, the subjunctive for من.

  2. شما باید بیایید.

    You must come.

باید stays the same, and بیایید shows the شما form.

  3. نباید در سرک بدوی.

You must not run in the street.

    نباید forbids the action.

  4. شاگردان باید هر روز درس بخوانند.

    Students must study every day.

بخوانند is the plural form for شاگردان.

  5. ما باید فردا زود بیدار شویم.

We have to get up early tomorrow.

شویم is the subjunctive of شدن, with no ب.

Common Mistakes

  • Giving the verb after باید the wrong person.

    من باید بروی.
    من باید بروم.

باید never changes, so the verb after it must match the person who must.

  • Using نباید for do not have to.

    نباید بیایید.
    لازم نیست بیایید.

نباید means must not. To say that something is not needed, use لازم نیست.
