The verb that follows is usually the present subjunctive, such as بروم or بمانیم.

How It Works

Pattern	Meaning	Example
مجبور + be	have to, had to	او مجبور بود هر روز راه برود.
مجبور شدن	ended up having to	مجبور شدم او را پیش داکتر ببرم.
لازم است که	it is necessary that	لازم است که این نامه را بنویسید.
لازم نیست که	there is no need	لازم نیست که زود بیایی.

After both words, the verb is in the present subjunctive and carries its own person ending: مجبورم زود بروم (I have to leave early), لازم است که شما بنشینید (you need to sit down).

مجبور شدم says that something happened and left you no choice. مجبور بودم says that this was your situation for a while.

لازم stays with است. The person goes on the verb after it, so لازم استم is not Dari for "I need to".

Use لازم نیست for "you don't have to". نباید says "you must not", which is a different message: لازم نیست بیایی (you don't need to come), نباید بیایی (you must not come).

In a short sentence, که can be left out: لازم است زود بروی.

ما مجبور استیم در خانه بمانیم، چون باران می‌بارد.
We have to stay at home because it is raining.
مجبور استیم matches ما, and بمانیم is the subjunctive.
مادرم مریض بود و من مجبور شدم او را پیش داکتر ببرم.
My mother was sick, so I had to take her to the doctor.
مجبور شدم says the situation left no choice, and ببرم is the subjunctive of بردن.
لازم است که این نامه را امروز بنویسید.
You need to write this letter today.
لازم است که is followed by the subjunctive بنویسید.
لازم نیست که زود بیایی؛ جلسه ساعت ده بجه شروع می‌شود.
You don't need to come early; the meeting starts at ten o'clock.
لازم نیست که says that there is no need.
او مجبور بود هر روز یک ساعت راه برود تا به دفتر برسد.
She had to walk for an hour every day to get to the office.
مجبور بود says that this was her situation for a long time, and برود is the subjunctive.

Common Mistakes

Using the present tense with می‌ after مجبور.
مجبورم زود می‌روم.
مجبورم زود بروم.
After مجبور, use the subjunctive with بـ and not the present tense with می‌.
Giving لازم a person ending, as if it were a verb.
من لازم استم که بروم.
لازم است که من بروم.
لازم stays with است. The person goes on the verb after که.
